Juan G. Berumen, Chair
Juan has a passion for positioning research as a tool to transform society and institutionalize social justice. With a PhD in Education Policy Studies from Indiana University, he has a wide range of experiences in different research capacities throughout the educational pipeline and policy arenas. Over the past 15 years, Juan has assessed policy implementation for university and statewide initiatives, conducted policy research for a California state assembly campaign, consulted for community-based organizations and schools, and advocated for equity on the national level. Currently, Juan is active on campus, working towards upholding the Berkeley promise. In addition to participating in various campus forums and discussions, he sits on the Chancellor’s Staff Advisory Committee and Co-Chairs for Alianza. Juan has also recently co-edited a volume, “Assessment and social justice: Pushing through the paradox,” a special edition for New Directions in Institutional Research that contributes to practical and scholarly understanding of assessment for promoting student success, including those historically marginalized in higher education.
